Purpose and scope
The UC Berkeley Libraries employ a wide variety of call numbers for our diverse collections. The majority of our general collections use standard Library of Congress Classification (LCC). However, many specialized collections utilize non-standard classification schemes, including some that are LCC-like, but that do not conform to strict LCC guidelines.
This document identifies both the standard (LCC) and non-standard schemes and provides guidelines for formatting them in field 852 of Alma holdings records. These guidelines do not provide guidance on how to select the appropriate classification for any given item, nor does it identify acceptable vs. unacceptable call numbers for copy-cataloging.
Please note that the schemes and examples are not exhaustive. Other examples, including non-standard schemes that have been retired from active use, can still be found in the catalog.
