LAUC-B Spring Assembly Tuesday, May 31, 2005 8:30-10:00 a.m. Morrison Library Handouts: Committee Reports I. Welcome LAUC-B Chair Christina Tarr called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. and welcomed the membership. II. Announcements and Introduction of New Members Tarr introduced new LAUC-B members Judy Bolstad, Document Delivery/ Reference Librarian at the Sheldon Margen Public Health Library and Dean Rowan, Reference Librarian in the Law Library. III. Recognition of Librarians Who Have Retired Since May 2004 Tarr recognized the eight librarians who have retired since May 2004: Walter Brem, Diane Fortner, Jean Han, Debby Kearney, Suzanne McMahon, AnnMarie Mitchell, Ingrid Radkey, and Juta Savage. IV. Reports Christina Tarr, LAUC-B Chair: Tarr reported that the Fall Assembly had fostered new interest in developing relations with SIMS. A taskforce had since been established to facilitate library staff/ SIMS relations, co-chaired by Corliss Lee and Norma Kobzina. The Berkeley campus had successfully hosted the statewide LAUC Fall Assembly. The Executive Committee had augmented travel funds to $700/librarian. The LAUC-B laptop has been replaced, guidelines on its use will be posted on the website. Dean Rowan has been named the Townsend Fellow. LAUC-B had co-sponsored a conference on Scholarly Publications. Principal Investigator status for Librarians policy had been distributed via e-mail. Tarr also noted a possible upcoming meeting with Christina Perez, Director, Office for Faculty Equity. Lucia Diamond, acting Chair CAPA: The last review cycle saw a large number of librarians come up for career status and merit review, perhaps prompted by concerns about the budget and talks of layoffs. Most of the 40 dossiers came in on time. CAPA had also reviewed 7 position descriptions and attended 14 interviews. V. Guest Speaker: Genaro Padilla, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Chris Tarr introduced guest speaker Genaro Padilla, a member of the English Department faculty who had served as Vice Chancellor since 1995. Vice Chancellor Padilla discussed his own background and education and how they had influenced his work as an administrator. He touched on themes of diversity, outreach and support for the student community in light of such negative moves as the 1999 withdrawal of Affirmative Action programs by the Regents. VI. Adjournment The Assembly was adjourned at 10:00 a.m.
