Charge

The LAUC-B Committee on Diversity provides leadership and guidance on issues relating to diversity and inclusion at the Library. The Committee focuses on cultural competence and library climate – for both our patrons and our staff – as well as on recruitment and retention of a diverse professional workforce. These are accomplished by the Committee’s charge to:

  • Organize, administer, and evaluate programs for bridging between LAUC-B and library staff.
  • Facilitate cultural competence and an enhanced library climate.
  • Support the LEIC Programs & Communications Subcommittee’s work by reviewing information related to campus diversity entities, and encourage librarian outreach to these groups.
  • Investigate outreach to campus, departmental, and career advisors for the recruitment of a diverse professional workforce.
  • Review information relating to the recruitment and hiring of librarians at UC Berkeley (currently addressed by the LEIC Hiring & Retention Subcommittee; if LEIC is not doing this work, responsibility reverts to this committee; membership should then include a representative from LHRD, ideally the Academic Personnel Analyst.)
  • Serve as a resource and LAUC-B point of contact for examining and providing feedback regarding concerns about inclusivity in language and/or impact within the Library's policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Provide the campus point of contact and information to support the work and projects of the LAUC-B Representative to the LAUC (Statewide) Committee on DEI.
  • Revise and update the committee’s web page, as needed.

Programs

  • Library Partnership Program - connects  library employees (from both University Library and Affiliated libraries) wishing to discuss and learn from each other; the committee pairs applicants based on their interests, and offers support for keeping partnerships on track.
  • Critical Library Work Reading Group - a facilitated reading/discussion group among library employees (from both University Library and Affiliated units), focusing on issues of critical practices and studies in librarianship; contact the committee or the group’s convener for readings and meeting times.
  • LibVoices - a fully moderated listserv of library employees (from both University Library and Affiliated libraries) with community guidelines. Co-sponsored by the LAUC-B Diversity Committee and the Library Equity and Inclusion Committee, posts and discussions focus on emerging issues in libraries, including social justice, critical library practice; the Diversity committee moderates membership.
