Item and patron barcode sequences

For UC BERKELEY items:

Berkeley barcode numbers start with a “C” or a “B” followed by nine numbers (no spaces). LBL barcodes for migrated items contain 3 alphabetic characters followed by 3 numbers.

For example:

C104078925 (Berkeley)

ACS637 (LBL) (edited)

For NRLF items:

NRLF has about 30 different barcode series, distinguishable by the first (and sometimes first and second) leading character(s). Each series consists of one or two leading alphabetic characters followed by one to seven numeric characters.

Some series have a leading “$” in front of the first alphabetic character. Numbers are not padded left with zeros (like some Berkeley barcode numbers). There are no spaces between alphabetic characters or “$” and alphabetic. There is a single space between the alphabetic character and the first numeric character. In numbers of four digits or more, single spaces occur where commas would normally be placed (e.g., 8 361 or 5 286 073).

The most common series are those with leading characters A, B, C, or D (or $A, $B, $C, or $D); these are assigned to regular collections items (mostly volumes) housed on standard shelving.

For example:

C 2 559 160

 $B 156 683

Physical NRLF barcode labels have "UC-NRLF" printed at the top, a machine-readable barcode number printed in the middle, and a human-readable barcode number printed on the bottom. NRLF has several different barcode series, distinguishable by the first (and sometimes first and second) leading character(s). They take one of three forms:

One or two leading alphabetic characters followed by one to seven numeric characters, with a space between the alphabetic and numeric characters. Barcodes with leading alphabetic character [A-D] may be, but are not always, preceded by a dollar sign "$". Barcodes with four or more numeric characters have a space before the last 3 numeric characters. Barcodes with seven numeric characters have a space before the last 6 numeric characters.

$D 2, B 4 987 232, JR 5 465, Z 465

The alphabetic characters "ED", followed by six numeric characters, with no spaces.

ED050239, ED435394

The alphabetic characters "RLF", followed by a single numeric character (5-9), followed by seven numeric characters, with no spaces.

RLF50002435, RLF5019098

The CDL generated UC-wide barcode rules to include more truncated logical test to identify NRLF barcodes:

If the length is 2-8 (excluding non-alphanumeric characters) must be NRLF

If the length is 11, the first 3 characters = RLF followed by 8 digits:

If the 8 digits are > 50,000,000 must be NRLF

If the 8 digits are < 50,000,001 must be SRLF

For SIS user barcodes

(i.e. student records. these records are ingested through our student information system):

10 digit barcodes with begin with "30" i.e. 304412345678

For UC Path user barcodes:

begin with "e"

begin with "a"

begin with "L"

9 digit numeric string
